No matter where I go, no matter what city I find myself in…this place will always call to me. As distant as I get from it at times, as disconnected and disillusioned as I can be, running around the bustling metropolis that is San Francisco…I find myself always longing for a little taste of the mountain air, for a moment with the sun and the sand and the icy water that seems so impossibly blue.

I find the call of the mountains and the lake particularly difficult to resist during the summer months, when I find my various social media feeds flush with photos of glimmering water and sun-soaked beaches and the smiling, suntanned faces of the friends who stayed.

I was able to take some time off from work and make a pilgrimage to the lake. My cousin was getting married and my mother’s entire family had descended upon the South Shore and it seemed irresponsible to not come up and supervise, so I took a week off work, packed far too many outfits, and boarded a bus bound for Reno.

I stopped at the Wild River Grill in Reno’s revitalized River Walk area for a glass of champagne (or two!) to kick off my vacation. I had a simple but delicious sandwich, and listened to Alabama Shakes’ album,  Sound & Color while the heat of the desert pushed the air through my hair. It felt like the first moment of summer vacation. My mom picked me up and we drove up the mountains, cresting the summit to the glimmering expanse of the lake spread below us. It’s a sight that never gets old, never ceases to make you pause and appreciate the wonder that nature has wrought.

I spent the majority of the week running around in dirty cut-offs and breezy tops. This particular pink number gets a lot of play, both in vacay-land and in my regular life. It’s the perfect button down and has re-ignited my love of over-sized vintage button downs from the 80’s and 90’s. I tried to get in as much time as possible with the woods, the water and these two great, furry beasts. The black lab is my brother’s spirit animal, Zeke, and the golden is my mom’s fur-baby, Nate.

I did get dressed up for the wedding, but, as expected…only managed to capture one mediocre image of my wedding attire…it’s on instagram, if you’re so inclined. As I said, I packed entirely too many outfits, considering that these shorts and my bathing suit dominated the sartorial spectrum this week. I cannot be blamed. summer in Tahoe is an exceptionally casual affair.

Back in the city and I’m reminded how important these times are for me. How essential to my spirit and my mental health retreating to the woods is. I am so blessed to be able to return to this place, to always be able to call it home.

Halleluja for summer! The temperature keeps creeping up, the sun is on full blast and everyone looks like they just got back from vacation, all sun soaked skin and sappy smiles as they loll slowly down the street. My freckles are multiplying and the desire to shed my clothes and jump into a large, icy body of water grows more and more persistent. Thinking back on my favorite summer time memories, their all full of this brilliant, golden light and the spark of sunlight on ripples, the sensation of the sand beneath me, the icy lap of water against my ankles. So much of my summer has been defined by water, by lakes and rivers and oceans and pools. By long days of swimming and diving and floating in it. By hot afternoons propped up on my elbows beside it, reading, laughing, drinking, talking. We used to have bonfires on the beach, bright faces ringing the flames, the pound of the ocean a shadowy mass beyond the circle of friends. We used to float rivers and fling ourselves off cliffs and rush through the air at the end of a ropeswing, holding our breath for the moment when we are plunged, once again, into the sweet, cool depths.

I can’t wait to get out and enjoy all the fruits of the summer time, particularly the aquatic variety. Southern California is renowned for it’s beaches and unfalteringly sunny days, and Ojai has tons of tiny, backwoods hot springs and watering holes speckling the hillsides. I plan to enjoy them all.

What’s your favorite way to pass a summer day?

Subtly Patriotic

Subtly-Patriotic

I never understood people who went out and bought a whole new outfit for holidays, particularly ones like Fourth of July or St. Patricks Day. Purchasing explicitly holiday themed items has always seemed strange to me. I’ve never been the type to rock the American Flag on a t-shirt or even invest in an ugly christmas sweater. I like my clothes to work year round, or at least for the full season they are designed for. So I threw together this list of Etsy curated items that will work great for your 4th of July festivities, without making you look like the party decorations.

1. Ok, so this is more overtly patriotic than subtle, but isn’t this Vintage 48 Star Flag via Heja Home just the coolest?
2. This Lapis Totem Cuff by LaurelHill is amazonian goddess awesome.
3. Every wardrobe should have something akin to this Cherry Red Dooney and Bourke Purse via Box of Hollyhocks. Works. With. Everything.
4. Slip this 90s Vintage Cream Cotton Dress from Decades on over your swim suit when the sun gets low in the evening.
5. I am really no fan of being cold, so I would probably bring some jeans, like these Vintage Shredded Denim Levis 501 from Maeven Vintage, to slip into before the fireworks go off.
6. Patriotic or motivational? Maybe both? Guts and Glory Tapestry by Belles and Ghosts.
7. Denver is a classically American city, and this Vintage “Loved in Denver” Baseball T-Shirt from Raggedy Threads is just plain classic.
8. The Blue Devine Bralette could probably pass for a bikini top. From KateXTee.
9. A little pop of red brings in the our nations favorite primary color with this Hot Red Necklace from Wire Fox Jewelry.
10. I actually plan to wear this Gold Star Headband from Bloom Design Studio every damn day. Practicality be damned.
11. This snuggly red Aztec Poncho via PIYOYO will keep you warm as the night wears on.
12. Draw some inspiration from the classic American pin up and throw a cute Navy and White Polka Dot Headscarf on, like this one from Sassy Stitches by Lori.
13. There are so many craft brews coming out this summer and choosing between them all can be kind of tough. Expand your options with this Dual Beer Glass from the aptly named Pretentious Beer Glass.
14. Every living room needs a badass Vintage Metal Eagle Wall Hanging. Period. Haven Vintage will totally back me up on this.
15. Beach hair is the best. Beach hair that smells like strawberries? Uhm, yes please. Strawberry Beach Waves – 8oz from The Gnarly Whale

What are you doing for the Fourth?

Summer, Glorious Summer

Summer! Glorious summer! June always meant the beginning of summer to me, as Tahoe generally got snow all through May, those first few days of June represented the beginning of long, hot days spent at the beach and nights filled with friends and adventure. Something about the summer is timeless to me, stretching on into forever in my mind. An endless succession of golden hued days that seem to blur into each other in a warm haze. Remember being a kid, how the in your mind and memory summer was this ages long season of dusty palms and scraped knees and ice cream melting down the sides of the cone. Strange how time telescopes like that, stretching on eternally in your mind when you’re small.

Now the seasons flicker by like a film in fast forward. I’m 25 already, and with the close of this summer I’ll be 26. Summer’s don’t last as long as they used to, and it’s come to mean something different to me now. The taste of cold beer, the smell of BBQ’s and hot asphalt. The way my skin feels after a day spent in the sun; saturated and heavy and gloriously drowsy. The slow descent of the sun to the horizon, the golden half-light of dusk. Leaning far out the passenger side window and letting the wind whip through my hair. Sand in everything I own.

I’m trying to savor this golden time. Take advantage of every hour of daylight and heat. Soak up as much vitamin D as possible. Bury my toes in the sand of as many beaches as I can find my way too. Accumulate a heap of new freckles. Attempt to acquire something resembling a tan. I want this summer to last forever in my mind, stretch on into an infinity of wonderful memories to get me through the winter.

How are you planning on making the most of your summer? What’s something that is intrinsically linked to summer time to you?

These fantastic vintage and handmade finds are from my favorite internet window-shopping retreat, Etsy, and man, have they got my heart aching for some communal time with mother nature. And since August was always the month of the summer I spent exploring the woods and sacrificing earthworms on fish hooks, it seemed appropriate to post this little nostalgic glimpse into the camping trips of my youth. I’m fairly sure my father still has his military issue sleeping bag from his time in the service. I can practically smell the campfire and pine trees.
